Why Tempered Glass is the Best Material for Glass Desks

Safety is one of the key concerns when deciding whether to bring glass furniture into your office or your home. If there happened to be an accident and the glass on your desk were to break, there could be dire consequences, not just in the loss of any equipment on the desk but also through injuries sustained from the broken glass. To help prevent this outcome, it is imperative to be sure that any glass desks you purchase are made with tempered glass.

Tempered glass goes by a few names, including safety glass and toughened glass. Compared to regular glass, tempered glass is much stronger because of the special process of heating and cooling it undergoes. Because of this tempered glass is very difficult to break, but if somehow it is broken the way it is designed means it will break into little pieces with rounded edges. This means you are much less likely to cut yourself on it than on non-tempered glass, which becomes sharp, pointed shards when it gets broken.

Some general safety tips to follow for glass desks are:

1. Be certain before purchase that the glass in your desk is tempered glass.

2. Be aware of how much weight your desk is designed to hold. The user’s manual should have this information.

3. Do not allow children or pets to play around or on the desk.

4. If your children are young or especially rowdy, or if you have large, rambunctious dogs, a glass desk may not be appropriate for your home.

Glass is always a somewhat risky building material, when compared to something like wood. Still, if you follow the tips listed above, you should feel confident in bringing a glass desk into  your home or office. Which is fortunate, since no other  materials have quite the same aesthetic appeal as glass.
