Trains in Our Society

It is no wonder that toy trains have earned such a strong following among collectors.  The history of trains is woven into not only American society, but societies throughout the world.  Trains offer a wonderful way to get from place to place while just taking in the scenery.

Railroads and trains played an important role in every day life years ago.  Although some may now think that travel by train is an outdated form of traveling, there are many positive aspects to train travel.  Train commuters don’t have to worry about traffic jams and paying for parking their vehicle.  Business people appreciate the advantages of rail travel compared to cars, planes and buses. Trains tend to be punctual, which in and of itself can be a difference maker for many people on their way to work.

Nowadays, automobiles are a threat to our very environment as they emit carbon monoxide fumes into our precious atmosphere.   Travel by train reduces the carbon foot print.  As society strives to “green up” we may see travel by rail coming back into vogue.

One country that is making the switch to rail travel is Japan.  Japanese high speed trains are known as shinkansen or bullet trains.  The largest railway system in Asia is the Indian railway system.  Train fares for tourists are higher than luxury buses however.  If you are going, the highest standard of rail travel is normally called first or business class although there is sometimes an additional class.  Night trains are common in many countries.  Some of these trains have sleepers, couches etc. available for comfort and convenience.  The sleeper cars on trains offer the passenger beds to sleep in , couchettes are passenger seats that recline in to berths like beds for sleeping .  Sometimes long distance trains have special wagons to carry cars and motor cycles.  The idea is you can travel a long distance at night without having to drive yourself.  Sometimes even a cinema car makes it possible for passengers to watch movies on board.

In extremely hot climate destinations, passengers may also be offered the option to pay more to travel in air conditioned carriages.  The most famous long distance trains are Cost Starlight of Usa, Trans-Siberian Railway of Russia, Canadian of Canada and The Indian pacific of Australia.
