The leaving work cake

What people remember most after a party is the cake. ‘What was the cake like?’ is a question often asked by non attendees of the soiree. The cake for the party should suit the occasion. When someone leaves the job for newer pastures (or if someone retires) we always provide a farewell party cake. Most of the time the cake is a chocolate one made with sponge, cream and lots of chocolate, as its quite popular. Even the cake toppings are sprinkles of chocolate. Occasionally we depart from the chocolate choice especially if the recipient is not a chocoholic and would prefer something else. We have had many unusual requests over the years but all requests are met.

The company chef will prepare the cake recipe depending on the individual needs and the number of people concerned. A popular alternative to the chocolate cake is the triple cream sponge. Other unusual requests were for 32 mini cakes and each one had to be different. They were all small square sponges but each one had different frosting color. Some had been decorated with chocolate flakes and others had candies of all kinds but no two were the same. Strangely, a Christmas cake gets requested by some, no matter what time of the year it happens to be. I have had ‘leaving’ Xmas cakes in June, July and August.

My most delicious favourite is a pound cake with strawberry filling and pink strawberry flavored butter frosting. I like the sponge to be moist with a syrup taste. I don’t intend to leave my employment but when I do this is the cake I will request from my colleagues. What a great tradition to have in a company! Nobody can remember when it all began but now its just part of a great company culture, but the problem is that very few people decide to leave and the company’s retention rate is extremely high. So not as many cakes as we would like!
