Keeping Outdoor Rabbits as Pets

The great thing about rabbits is that they can adapt to a number of environments. So while you may think of rabbits as common household pets, they can actually be quite happy in your backyard. There are important things to remember if you want to keep your outdoor rabbit happy. Some would consider that it is much harder work, but many rabbits will appreciate the chance to have more freedom. As long as you understand your rabbit’s need and its preferences, you can certainly keep it outdoors if you prefer.

The advantage to keeping an outdoor rabbit is that cleaning is a much easier task. When confined indoors, rabbits can make a big mess in their cages and they need constant attention. They can also run around and cause havoc by nibbling on your carpets or furniture. You won’t have to deal with that if you keep your rabbit outside but that doesn’t mean that overall care will be simpler. Outdoor rabbits need adequate housing since you will be unable to just let it free in your own backyard. Even if you have fencing, rabbits are capable of digging underground so make sure to have a good hutch for your rabbit as a home base.

Keeping an outdoor rabbit is much more than just leaving your rabbit in your backyard. You will want to designate an area for it to run around and to feed. Rabbits have a tendency to cause mischief so make sure that your rabbit is well away from your garden or flower beds. Define a clear area for your rabbit and train it to go back to its hutch when you sleep at night. You won’t be able to leave your rabbit unattended because there is the constant threat of predators. But as long as you have a well marked area, your rabbit can live quite happily in a more natural environment.
