How Does an Infrared Grill Work?
Infrared grills have become a popular plaything for backyard grillers. For those who can afford them these grills produce perfect results in half the time of a traditional grill. They can be quite expensive; however, as with all technology prices will eventually fall enough for everyone to enjoy them someday. Infrared grills work similarly to traditional grills with a few slight differences.
A traditional grill, either gas or charcoal, cooks food either directly or indirectly with an open flame. These grills can produce great results but can often be tricky to use. This is especially true with a traditional charcoal grill. Charcoal can be very hard to keep a consistent temperature when cooking. A gas grill is easier to use but has a limit to the heat it can produce.
This is where an infrared grill comes in. Most of these grills are still powered by gas or propane; however, the technologies used in these grills allow for much higher heat production. Instead of cooking using an open flame, an infrared grill contains ceramic or stainless steel plates which produce a much higher heat.
The results of using an infrared grill can be terrific. Infrared grills cook steaks to near perfection. Steaks can be perfectly seared on the outside while leaving the inside tender and juicy. The restaurant quality steak is now a possibility directly from your backyard.
One of the drawbacks of the infrared grill is the limitations in the foods that you may cook. Many of these grills do not have temperature controls that may be turned down. It can be very hard to cook foods such as fish on an infrared grill without burning the outside and leaving the inside raw. However, if your diet, like any good grill master, contains an ample amount of thick red meat then an infrared grill is exactly what you need.
