Dare to Use Black and White in the Toddler’s Room

Pink is for girls.  Blue is for boys.  Yellow has been the traditional color of choice for the newborn’s nursery when we did not know if the baby would be a boy or a girl.  Tradition still holds, but with a new twist.  Today black and white toddler bedding is finding its way to the nursery.

Beginning with a crib set in black and white is widely accepted today.  The trim and the accent colors in the nursery are generally the distinguishing appointments to indicate that the newborn is a boy or a girl.  The use of black and white has combined to create a neutral color scheme that needs a third color, usually pink, blue or yellow, to let us know if the newborn is a little princess or a little prince.

Many parents may consider the black and white combination a little stark when first considering the nursery scheme.  However, once the new mom sees the patterns she can easily be won over.  With the toile patterns that fill the many toddler sets today, the black is softened by the white background.

Or perhaps the new mom dares to be bold enough to go with a black and white shabby chic look, combining a damask toile pattern with polka dots and stripes.  Imagine the appeal of a sheet and comforter in the damask toile pattern.  Add bumpers that have a white background with large black polka dots.  Toss in a black and white stripe crib skirt or toddler bed skirt and the newborn or the toddler has an updated and stylish shabby chic nursery or bedroom.

Toddler beds are often converted from cribs that meet safety standards.  With the convertible crib the toddler can enjoy the bedding from birth through his or her first few years.  Moms will enjoy the combination as she can change the entire mood of the room by making simple changes with the accent color.

Black and white bedding that was once the domain only of adults now creates the most upscale and fashionable cribs and toddler beds.  What was once taboo in the decorating world has transformed the nursery from traditional to fashionable.
