More and more owners of Dogs and Cats are now using a heartworm medicine on a monthly basis to protect their pets, but are they really needed?

Let’s take a quick look at the arguments. The fact is that in many areas the risk of animals getting heartworms is relatively low, but there is a risk. We need to decide for ourselves by doing some local research if a treatment is needed or not. We should find out the rates of infection and we can do this relatively easily. This really means that if there are a number of mosquitoes present then we should treat for heartworms. This is the only way our pets can become infected.

We also need to weigh up the risk of infection to see if we really need to treat. If mosquito levels are very low then the chances of infection are greatly reduced and this means that we do not need to buy a medication. However, for warm countries we can guarantee the presence of the mosquito so we should at least use during the main months of their presence if they are out in fairly large numbers.
