A Brief History of the LEGO Star Wars Theme

We all remember playing with LEGOs as children, the fun and adventure of taking the various, colored interlocking blocks and fashioning something amazing and creative based on what came from our imaginations. Everyone also remembers the Star Wars saga, one of the most popular movie franchises to ever hit the scene. Who doesn’t remember the first shiver down their spine at their first glimpse of Darth Vader, or the shutter at the deep, rasping voice behind the mask. It should have come as no surprise when in 1999 LEGO chose to incorporate the Star Wars franchise into their amazing building blocks collections. What makes the LEGO Star Wars sets so unique is the fact that this was the first intellectual property to be licensed by LEGO.

In 1999 LEGO introduced the first few sets, but certainly not the last, to the public. The sets released in the beginning were based on the original trilogy series and were released to coincide with the theatrical release of The Phantom Menace. As each new film in the series was released Lego released not only models of ships and scene sets from those films, but they also released sets and ships from the original trilogy series as well.

LEGO has not only manufactured scene sets and ships from Star Wars series, but they have also released three successful video games featuring the LEGO name. These games are Lego Star Wars: The Video Game , Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy , Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Not only has the Star Wars series prompted LEGO to venture into the video game genre, but it has also prompted them to enter into the world of animation. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of LEGOs release of the Star Wars play sets LEGO introduced their frist animated film; LEGO STAR WARS: THE QUEST FOR R2-D2.

LEGO has not only manufactured and released the smaller play sets from the Star Wars series, they have also release Ultimate Collector Sets. The Ultimate Collector Sets are much more detailed and are more for display purposes than for fun and play, as such they are also more expensive and usually include a stand to display your completed set on. The Ultimate Collectors Sets also include a collector’s card with the set as well as Star Wars LEGO figures pertaining to the scene the set depicts.
